Upon This Rock

I stand firm in my faith, happy and grateful.

And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. – Matthew 16:18

In chapter 16 of the book of Matthew, Jesus names his follower Simon as Peter, the rock on which he will build his church. Strong’s Concordance describes Peter (Petros in Greek) as being like a rock by “reason of his firmness and strength of soul”.

This declaration from Jesus comes after Peter proclaims that Jesus is the Christ. Peter’s new name represents the shift in consciousness that comes from recognizing the Christ Presence. Jesus also tells Peter that he will give him the keys to the kingdom of Heaven.

Any Unity student with a basic understanding of the Fillmore’s concept of Twelve Powers knows that Peter represents our Power of Faith. The Greek word “ekklesia”, translated as “church” in this passage, means “called out” or “called forth”. Perhaps the well-known story of Jesus naming Peter as his rock tells us that the Power of Faith is the foundation upon which we build up or call forth an awareness of the Christ.

I use our first two basic Principles as the rock on which I build the consciousness of my Divinity. When I am troubled or confused, I remind myself that GOD is all there is, and I AM all that GOD IS.

I practice Faith by proclaiming this Truth firmly and strongly. If GOD is all there is, there can be no opposing Power. And if I AM all that GOD IS, then nothing can stand against me.

I am so happy and grateful to know that standing firmly in my Faith is the key to Heaven consciousness!
