did Jesus die for our sins?

QUESTION: Do you believe that Jesus atoned for us once and for all by dying on the cross on Good Friday?

ANSWER: There’s a lot I could address in this question! It opens the door to numerous other questions. For instance, what is the difference between the historical Jesus and the mythological Jesus? Is original sin a reality, or were we born into an original blessing? If God is all good, and we are expressions of God, and therefore good as well, is there any need for salvation? If there is no need for salvation, then what does the death of Jesus really signify?

These are some fascinating questions to ponder, and I realize that I am not giving any answers! So, in my opinion, the short answer to the first question – “do you believe that Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins?” – is NO. Some metaphysicians would say that Jesus’s death on the cross was not a sacrifice, but a demonstration.

The story of Jesus’s death and resurrection shows us that death has no power and is not the ultimate reality. God is Life, and God is Eternal. We are all manifestations of that Eternal Life. I realize this idea is controversial, especially if you have never entertained such a thought before.  I invite you to give this some consideration, approaching the Easter story from a metaphysical viewpoint (meaning ‘beyond the physical’), a story that contains great wisdom and a lesson for all of us today, rather than historical fact.
